WRT Board of Directors Nominations & Expectations

The board of directors of the ECU Women’s Roundtable develops and implements strategic initiatives that promote leadership, service, networking, and philanthropy. The ultimate role of the board is to carry out the mission and the evolving strategic plan of the board in concert with the strategic goals of the university and ECU alumni association.   Board Members may serve up to two (2) consecutive four (4) year terms.  To be considered for initial or continuing service on the board of directors, a potential nominee and/or director shall be an alumna, ECU employee, or community member and will be required to meet the following standards:

Be an advocate for ECU: Encourage and inform other alumnae, current students, and community partners about the mission of the ECU Women’s Roundtable.

Financially support the goals of the ECU Women’s Roundtable: Consistently support the board’s fundraising efforts aligned to scholarship funding, and other fundraising campaigns. Recommended minimum expectation for board member donations is based on Board[1]level participation:

  • $500/year for Associate Board Members (35 years of age and under)
  • $1,000/year for full Board Members (35+ years of age)

Stay informed: Understand the tenets of our strategic plan and how you can leverage your skills and network to achieve success.

Attend meetings and events: Participate in two board meetings a year as well as board orientation and retreats (in-person is preferred, but virtual is available as needed).  Events include the tri-annal Incredible ECU Women Luncheon and other opportunities of engagement through the ECU Women’s Initiative.

Participate in board meetings and committees: Serve on at least one committee and attend meetings as required. Prepare in advance for meetings and discussions by reviewing agendas and all supporting materials.

Provide Nominations: Recruit, recommend and nominate qualified alumnae for board, committee, and event planning participation.

Incredible Pirate

The Women’s Roundtable acknowledges the contributions of women to East Carolina University’s legacy and encourages new levels of commitment by women to the university’s future. Through its network of former students and friends of ECU, the Women’s Roundtable creates a culture of giving at ECU by focusing its efforts on raising funds for scholarships, building a stronger base of women committed to the university and forming a deeper pool of women to be considered for leadership roles at ECU.  In 2007, the Women’s Roundtable honored 100 Incredible Pirates, formerly the Incredible ECU Women, who were recognized by their peers as outstanding leaders in their fields in honor of ECU’s Centennial Celebration. Since then, more than 140 women have been recognized with this honor.

Eligibility

The award is presented to those women who are ECU alumnae and have attended ECU for a minimum of two semesters. They must have achieved excellence in at least one of ten categories listed on the application. An open call for nominations will be made when available.  Nominations are kept on file for two nomination cycles. Nominees may neither be deceased nor sitting members of the Women’s Roundtable Board of Directors. NOTE: Honorees must be able to commit to attending the luncheon event in Greenville to be named an Incredible Pirate officially.

The luncheon is held every three years with the next event taking place in fall 2025. More information about the event will be forthcoming and can be found by clicking here.
